» Vocal Booths

Total studio design has over the last few years become market leaders in the design and build of high performance vocal booths / isolation rooms. It is a market which has been, in our opinion, badly served with most engineers putting up with, as opposed to been happy with their booths.

We took a gamble and invested a lot of time and money fine tuning a design that would give our clients, if required 100% silence. Our claims are not just 'chest beating' as we have independent test data, which will impress even the most skeptical senior audio engineer.

Our unique natural air ventilation systems means no planning applications as there are no external condensers to mount, just vent covers. The ventilation systems have (depending on the application) up to 10 separate attenuators, they filter out (budget dependent) 100% of external noise pollution.

If you are in any doubt how far in front our isolation rooms are, take a look at all available test data on our competitor's web pages and then take a look at ours!

Below is a slideslow of the build and test data from a client in Soho, London who have kindly let us use their attenuation figures, ambient noise reduction figures and internal reverberation times from a recently completed project in Soho.

Soho is a notoriously hard market to crack as most of the production company's tend to use the " better the devil you know thought path".  Due to our client breaking the mould they are now benefiting from their investment.

The tests were conducted by an independent acoustic consultant and all equipment calibrated and certified.

reverberation time data (RT60) for booths 4 and 5
Conclusion
The studios have performed to a high standard:
Internal acoustics - The internal acoustics are difficult to control at low frequencies in small rooms. However the reverberation times are very balanced and rise gradually at low frequencies. The mid and high frequencies are exceptionally flat.

Sound insulation - The sound insulation has exceeded the predicted values especially between the 2 vocal booths.

Background noise - the background noise levels inside the booths has also exceeded benchmark performance criteria for studios. A common criteria used to rate the internal ambient/background noise levels is the noise rating curves (NR). The ambient noise consists of noise from external sources i.e. other users in the building, services i.e. ventilation and also external building noise i.e. traffic and machinery. The lower the NR figure is the better. The frequency range used in NR curves is usually between 31.5 - 8000Hz. A medium standard for studios is to achieve NR25. A high quality studio is NR20. The booths both achieved NR16. Also of note is that at low frequencies, both booths came below the NR0 rating on the NR curves.
As you can see from above, the reverberation times are excellent and can be replicated in any booth we construct.

To those of you who are technically minded, the NR rating of 16 is of an extremely high standard and again can be replicated (budget permitted).
