The ultimate compliment came when commissioned by The Royal Academy of Music to design and build their new state of the art recording studio and control room. As you can imagine working for the best music academy in the world is a challenge as their standards are extremely high.
We had to guarantee there would be no leakage of any sound, which would disturb the surrounding lecture rooms. The control room acoustics were especially testing as the spaces proposed for the studio were completely inadequate, giving our acoustic design consultant plenty of sleepless nights.
Roderick Buchanan Dunlop of The Royal Academy commissioned us as he had worked with other studio building company's in the past with disastrous results and wanted to make sure the studio was built right first time, and on time, as there was a waiting list for the new studio and any delays due to construction errors would be costly and Total Studio Design would have incurred penalties.
Once completed, the room acoustics were fine tuned and we believe would surpass any studio in the world today, anyone lucky enough to ever use the Manson Studio in the basement, drop us an e-mail and let us know what you think.

A client in London was about to sign a 10 year lease on an industrial unit, we advised him to let us survey the building before he put pen to paper, wisely he did and after one of the tests conducted, (an electro magnetic field test) we found a 33,000 volt cable running parallel to the proposed studio. Not only would this have made recording impossible it would also have had serious health implications for anybody exposed for long periods. Being a 24/7 studio it would have been extremely dangerous for the producer and his clients.
We came up with a studio design made of sheet lead and X-ray plaster. Not all findings are as dramatic, but a full free site survey is highly recommended. A site survey also lets us determine if your biggest concern is noise getting in or noise getting out. It cost a lot less to attenuate external ambient noise as opposed to 110 decibels of drum leakage.
We also sound test on completion to prove the build will comply with all planning regulations regarding noise abatement. We also supply written guarantees to back this up. The site visit would help us ascertain your requirements and streamline your costs.

We were asked by Gaydio Radio, the first lesbian / gay / bisexual and transsexual radio station in the UK to design and build 2 studios for live broadcasts.
The main problem with this build was the studios location. Situated in the centre of Manchester on the second floor of a 25 story glass fronted office block, the building suffered from inherent low frequency noise issues caused by the uneducated construction methods of the 1960's. It was never designed to attenuate noise as we found out when we started the project.
We were alarmed to find the tenants on the top floor could hear us drilling, 23 floors above! Due to the positioning of the dry risers and lifts, the noise within the building was going to be detrimental to a live broadcast based radio station.
Anything less than 2 silent studios would not have been acceptable for Gaydio Radio. We are happy to report through clever construction methods pioneered by Total Studio Design limited, the build was a complete success. Total studio design has over the last few years become market leaders in the design and build of high performance vocal booths. It is a market which has been, in our opinion, badly served with most engineers putting up with, as opposed to being happy with their booths.We took a gamble and invested a lot of time and money fine tuning a design that would give our clients, if required 100% silence.

on a budget
Studio construction doesn't need to be a bank busting affair as some studio builders would have you think!on a budget
We have pioneered new construction techniques which have helped some of the biggest names in the industry achieve their goals on relatively modest budgets.
A good example is the British pop group the FEELING. We built the guys a studio, in of all places, an old east London pub and utilised the pubs original soundproofing quality's to control the costs. By time we had finished with the pub, the guys had a world class recording studio in which they recorded their fantastic new album "Together We Were Made"
Alistair Clegg, Image Studios Ltd., Manchester - Total Studio Design built Alistair's studio in an old abattoir in Manchester.
It had numerous problems, not least houses 10 metres away who had partitioned against the studio.
Alistair goes on to say" this was my first studio and I had used all my life savings to finance the project. The major concern was sound not leaking out which was a condition of Manchester Council letting the project proceed.
We had to have an independent sound test on completion to prove we had achieved our aims. Total Studio Design was the only company we approached who would offer us such guarantees. They have a no nonsense honest approach and are very easy to work with.
